Event Description

An exciting new chamber opera, Cuatro Corridos, will be the centerpiece of this year's Composers' Symposium. The opera tells the story of women trapped in a cycle of slavery and prostitution across the U.S.-Mexico border. The free performance will take place at 7 pm April 7 at South Broadway Cultural Center.

Preceding the opera will be the annual Robb Concert at 5 p.m. April 6 in Keller Hall on the UNM campus. The program will include John Donald Robb compositions inspired by friends and colleagues, along with his quintet for piano and strings. Rounding out the program will be works by contemporary New Mexico composers.

The performance of the opera will be a launching point for a series of panel discussions throughout the symposium. This will include a discussion of the current realities of trafficking with Lynn Sanchez, director of the New Mexico Human Trafficking Victim Services, in a talk preceding the opera on April 7.

Throughout the symposium the role the arts play in southwestern multicultural identity will be examined, along with the effectiveness of the arts as a provocation and reflection upon contemporary social issues. A concert will take place every evening. All events are free and most will take place on the University of New Mexico campus.
