Event Description

Trumpet Times Two

John and Brynn Marchiando are known to Albuquerque audiences through their diverse performing and teaching activities.  John is Assistant Professor of Trumpet at the University of New Mexico, and the Marchiandos make up two-thirds of the trumpet section for the New Mexico Philharmonic, performing the positions of Principal Trumpet (John) and Associate Principal Trumpet (Brynn).

The Marchiandos will offer Chatter-goers a preview of their upcoming performance at the International Trumpet Guild conference, which features contemporary compositions for two trumpets and piano.  The

composers –Jospeh Turrin, Kevin McKee, Tim Jansa, and Steven Sacco—have considerable experience writing for brass instruments, and all four craft music that is both fresh and accessible.

The spoken word portion of the program will be presented by Ken Arkind. Arkind is a National Poetry Slam Champion, Nuyorican Poets Café Grand Slam Champion, published author, and featured TedX Speaker who has performed his work in 49 States, 6 countries and at over 150 colleges and universities.

He is the current and founding Program Director and former head coach for The Denver Minor Disturbance Youth Poetry Project, an independent literary arts organization dedicated to helping Colorado youth between the ages of 13-19 find their voices through the mediums of poetry and performance, and two time Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Champions.

He has been featured in the documentaries SPIT! and Slamplanet, as well as on HBO, CBS, NBC, the Australian Broadcasting Company and Borders.com’s Open Door Poetry series alongside former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins. He has been a speaker/performer at multiple TedX conferences, Chicago Ideas Week 2011, the Brisbane Writers’ Festival, Auckland Readers and Writers Festival, the 2013 National Conference on Media Reform and was a keynote speaker for the 2013 Colorado Creative Industries Summit. He will also be reading at Bookworks on April 26 at 5pm http://bkwrks.com/ken-arkind
