JON GARCIA'S "CURIOS"
WOOD-TURNED OBJECTS OF MANY SHAPES + SIZES
FRIDAY, JANUARY 4 FROM 5-8PM + RUNNING THRU 1-31-13
Jon Garcia creates functional and non-functional wood-turned sculptures. His laminating technique combines additive and reductive processes and offers a complimentary fusion of geometric rigidity and organic matter. Such design allows Jon to bond sequential layers and shapes that originate from several wood species. For January’s show, Jon’s geometric creations are differentiated by the unique color and patterns that woods like Imbuia, Aspen, and Tasmanian Eucalyptus offer. Burls which Jon utilized include: Corrugata, Gimlet, Maple, Red Morrell, Tiger Myrtle, and Yellow Box.
Over the last few months, our gallery challenged Jon Garcia to create value-oriented, wood-turned CURIOS from his inventory of exotic woods.
Jon came thru and made several timeless objects with new twists from his turns. If only Jon had embarked on his latest journey, earlier in time, he might have changed the course of history in several ways. Please consider the following possibilities:
~ Ideal Toys when they produced their "Battling Tops" kids’ game in the 1960s didn't use Jon Garcia's Spinning Tops.
~ Henry Aaron when he broke Babe Ruth's homerun record didn't use a Jon Garcia baseball bat made from Imbuia.
~ When Sam Malone opened a beer for Norm at Cheers in the 1980s, he didn't use Jon Garcia's Bottle Opener.
~ When Jim Carrey got a haircut to star in the movie "Dumb and Dumber", he didn't have access to one of Jon Garcia's bowls to enhance his "look".
Jon's "Tree Creations" could have helped all in the aforementioned instances.
All kidding aside, are you now curious about Jon's CURIOS? If you are, come visit us on Friday night, January 4th, and see them for yourself!
