Sandra Cisneros, acclaimed author of The House on Mango Street and Caramelo, is creating an art installation in the tradition of Día de Muertos ofrendas in the NHCC Art Museum. The work, titled "A Room of Her Own: My Mother's Altar," honors Cisneros' mother, Elvira Cordero Cisneros. It opens to the public with a special viewing in the museum at 6:00 pm, followed by a presentation and reading by the author and artist in the Bank of America Theatre. Cisneros will discuss the creation of her ofrenda and read her essay "An Ofrenda for My Mother," which appeared in Granta. She will also read poems from a new collection and excerpts from her forthcoming book, Have You Seen Marie?, illustrated by artist Ester Hernandez. The NHCC's presenting partner for these events, Bookworks, will be selling Cisneros' books at her presentation, and the author will be available to sign copies afterwards. The altar will remain on view in the NHCC Art Museum through March 2012.
