Event Description

Sandra Postel, director of the independent Global Water Policy Project and Freshwater Fellow of the National Geographic Society, will lead a discussion of global and local water resources and policy, March 4 at 6 p.m. at Albuquerque Academy. Postel will provide a global outlook, and also will look specifically at the Southwest and what each of us, as citizens, can do to change the course of water consumption.

In 2010, Postel was appointed Freshwater Fellow of the National Geographic Society, where she serves as lead water expert for the Society’s freshwater efforts.  Postel is co-creator of Change the Course, the national freshwater conservation and restoration campaign being pioneered by National Geographic and its partners.

A leading authority and prolific author on international water issues, Postel has been hailed for her inspiring, innovative and practical approach to promoting the preservation and sustainable use of freshwater. She is author of Pillar of Sand: Can the Irrigation Miracle Last? and Last Oasis: Facing Water Scarcity, chosen by Choice magazine as a 1993 Outstanding Academic Book. Last Oasis appears in eight languages and was the basis for a 1997 PBS documentary.

The lecture is Tuesday, March 4 at 6 p.m. at Simms Center for the Performing Arts on the Albuquerque Academy campus. The event is free, but guests are asked to register in advance at www.aa.edu/communityacademy, in order to ensure sufficient seating.

The lecture is part of Albuquerque Academy’s Spring 2014 Community Academy lecture series. Details about all of the upcoming lectures can be found at www.aa.edu/communityacademy.
