516 ARTS and New Mexico Wilderness Alliance present a joint fundraising event to celebrate the premiere of Guggenheim Fellow Michael Berman’s new book, Gila: Radical Visions, The Enduring Silence. His black and white photographs of the Gila Wilderness offer a wordless exploration into this complex and subtle landscape. Complementing the stunning photos, the book includes essays by Charles Bowden, Philip Connors, Martha S. Cooper, Dave Foreman, Alex Muñoz, Sharman Apt Russell, M. H. Salmon, Patrick Toomay and others, all inspired by the Gila Wilderness.
Over 80 of Michael’s photographs from the book will be displayed at 516 ARTS February 2 – 16, 2013 as part of this fundraising project. Please join us on Saturday, February 2 for a reception, booksigning, talk and silent auction, with a conversation featuring artist Michael Berman and acclaimed writers Dave Foreman, Jorge Garcia and Patrick Toomay. There is a suggested $5-20 donation at the door.
Prints by Michael Berman will be available to contributors at the following levels:
Donors $100 & up receive the new book, plus:
$100 donors receive an 8.5” x 11” print
$250 donors receive a 17” x 22” print (only 1 print of each image in the book available)
$500 donors receive a 22” x 30” print (choose an editioned print)
The highly collectible, 44” x 54” print titled Storm is being auctioned off as part of this benefit. It is the sole remaining print in the edition, created for the artist’s Guggenheim Fellowship and exhibited for the Governor’s Awards at the New Mexico Fine Arts Museum and the Governor’s Gallery. Bidding starts at $3,000. The silent auction continues through February 16 at 5pm.
All of the photographs remain on view at 516 ARTS through February 16, during which time, the fundraiser continues.
