This is a poetry reading/appreciation course; it is not a poetry writing course. If you have been wanting to reconnect with poetry as a reader, but the last time you did was in high school or college, and you're feeling a little rusty or uncertain, this course is for you. We will explore simple poetic elements such as rhythm, rhyme, figures of speech, lineation, and other techniques which poets use to achieve power and beauty in their poems. To see how, we will study classic poems by Shakespeare, Whitman, Dickinson, Cummings and Frost, as well as more contemporary works by Mary Oliver, Audre Lorde, Gwendolyn Brooks and Wislawa Szymborska. Tuition is $85.
