Event Description

Las Alegres Ambulancias was started in 1905 in Palenque de San Basilio, Colombia, with a mission to preserve the music and dance traditions associated with lumbalu, a ceremony reminiscent of the funeral practices of its African ancestors. As representatives of the culture of Colombia’s Caribbean area, Las Alegres Ambulancias are a living demonstration of how this 500-year-old African tradition is surviving in this globalized world.
