Few artists in the country/folk field today wear as many hats as Laurie Lewis. Some know her as the smoothly melodic, thoughtful songwriter whose songs have been recorded by Kathy Mattea and Patsy Montana. Others know her as one of the premier fiddlers and vocalists in bluegrass and New Traditionalist circles. Her own band, Grant Street, is a fixture on bluegrass and folk circuits. Originally a classically trained violinist, Lewis became a California bluegrass and old-time fiddle champion in the 1970s, and went on to found the Good Ol’ Persons (with Kathy Kallick) before forming the Grant Street String Band in 1979. Tom Rozum, mandolin & vocals, is also an accomplished fiddle, mandola, and guitar player. He first joined Grant Street in 1986, which began a musical and personal partnership with Lewis that has produced 12 albums and countless performances around the globe as well as a Grammy nomination for their 1995 CD, The Oak and the Laurel. Together and individually, Lewis and Rozum are widely regarded as among the leading lights of modern bluegrass. Fiddler, Chad Manning, has won plaudits for his work with the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience and is a much-sought-after teacher and session player. He has recorded three solo albums and appeared on Lewis’ CD, Blossoms. A formidable talent on banjo, Cajun accordion, mandolin, and guitar, Patrick Sauber primarily plays banjo with the Right Hands band,. He has recorded or performed with Doc Watson, Weird Al Yankovic, The Limeliters, and Dirk Powell, and can also be heard on Lewis’ Blossoms CD. A long time resident of northern New Mexico now based in northern California, Sharon Gilchrist is a vocalist, mandolin player and upright bassist steeped in traditional Appalachian music. She currently performs with Darol Anger and the Furies and adds her “spacious, graceful and fiery nuanced” bass lines to the Right Hands.
