Event Description

On Wednesday, February 6th at 7:00 p.m., the public is invited to a program focused on the New Mexico Native Plant Society's Conservation Initiatives presented by outgoing NPSNM Conservation Chair, Jim McGrath.

Jim is a contract botanist specializing in wetland plants. He has performed threatened and endangered plant species surveys, botanical inventories and wetland delineations. During the 1990s, he worked seasonally for the National Park Service leading nature walks and doing evening programs. He has also worked as a science teacher at the secondary level. Jim has an M.S. degree in Zoology (ecology) from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. During 2011-2012, he has served as the Conservation Chair for the Native Plant Society of New Mexico and he has served as the program chair for NPSNM’s Albuquerque chapter for seven years. During the program, Jim will discuss a New Mexico natural area, the Blue Hole Cienega nature preserve in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, home to the federally threatened Pecos sunflower and the state endangered Wright's marsh thistle. He will also discuss rare plant field trips, especially the effort to find populations of the elusive Cloudcroft Phacelia.

A short chapter meeting precedes the talk. Native plant books will be on display and available for purchase. This free public program is sponsored by the Albuquerque Chapter, Native Plant Society of New Mexico, and takes place at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History, 1801 Mountain Rd. NW, Albuquerque. More information about the organization is available at www.npsnm.org.
