Local pianist Fred Sturm will take you to Rio just before 1920, when the paths of three composers crossed. Ernesto Nazareth, whose 150th birthday is this year, wrote “Brazilian Tangos,” based on the popular “choro” tradition. Darius Milhaud, visiting Rio, was inspired by Nazareth’s music to write Saudades do Brazil. And Villa-Lobos, a friend and colleague of Nazareth in the popular tradition, took Milhaud to hear the authentic music of Rio, and was inspired in turn by the French music Milhaud brought with him. Works by all three will be performed, with historical commentary and anecdotes.
