Outpost welcomes The Clayton Brothers to The Space for the first time for two nights! Thursday will be a regular concert, while Friday will be an Outpost Benefit featuring a small table jazz club setting and pre-concert reception with tacos, desserts & more. Outpost will also use this special concert to rename and dedicate the Outpost’s performance area “The Weil Hall” in recognition and appreciation of the generous donations made by Bumble Bee Bob Weil and his family which made possible the purchase of the Outpost building by Outpost Productions in Fall 2011.
Founded in 1977 by brothers John & Jeff Clayton, The Clayton Brothers, were recently described by Jazz Times Magazine as “snazzy stewards of a timeless brand of funky hard bop that won’t go out of style so long as any of us have a hedonistic bone in our bodies.” While the brothers’ musical paths diverged over the years, they continued to share a common vision that would draw them back together. Their recent releases, including their latest, The Gathering, showcase a rich musical stew of ballads, blues and funk-bop. Bassist, John Clayton, who gained prominence in both the jazz and classical fields, served as the Artistic Director of Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic from 1998 through 2001 (he also served as Artistic Director for Bumble Bee Bob’s Jazz Party Series in the late 1980’s). A seven-time Grammy nominated artist, he is also an accomplished composer, arranger and conductor who has worked with everyone from Count Basie to Diana Krall, Quincy Jones, Carmen McRae and the Tonight Show Band. Saxophonist, Jeff Clayton began his career as a touring and studio musician, recording with Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Michael Jackson, Earth Wind & Fire and others. As a jazz musician, he has worked with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Ella Fitzgerald, Lionel Hampton, Lena Horne, McCoy Tyner, and Dee Dee Bridgewater, to name a few. John Clayton’s son, Gerald Clayton (piano), appeared at Outpost with his own trio in Spring 2013. He is a dynamic young artist who has already earned three Grammy nominations and has been praised by Jazz Times, the Los Angeles Times, and The New York Times. Trumpeter, Terell Stafford, has been hailed as “one of the great players of our time” by piano legend McCoy Tyner. Besides performing with the Clayton Brothers, he is also currently a member of the Grammy award-winning Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and the Frank Wess Quintet. And substituting for drummer Obed Calvaire will be drummer, Peter Van Nostrand, who has performed with Kenny Barron, Brian Lynch, Jimmy Heath, Kurt Elling, and Natalie Cole, among many others. Part of the new generation of young forward thinking musicians, he is one of the busiest young drummers in New York and is also a budding bandleader and composer with various performances and recording projects in the works.
