Event Description

Guggenheim fellow and 2009 Downbeat International Critics Poll Winner, alto saxophonist, Rudresh  Mahanthappa, returns to Outpost for two nights. One of the most innovative young musicians and composers in jazz today, Mahanthappa was named Alto Saxophonist of the Year in 2009 and 2010 by the Jazz Journalist Association and has achieved international recognition for his recordings which have received rave reviews by the New York Times, NPR, Village Voice, and many others. Incorporating the culture of his Indian ancestry with myriad musical influences, he has created a truly groundbreaking artistic vision. Gamak continues Mahanthappa’s modern jazz exploration of South Indian as well as Indonesian musical concepts. As he describes it, “It’s not a through-composed piece, but a template for improvisation, exploration.” Gamak features David “Fuze” Fiuczynski, guitar; François Moutin, bass; and Dan Weiss, drums.

$30/$25 Outpost Members & Students. Available in advance by phone or in person at Outpost.
