Duke City Fix

Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

My wife asked me to get her some empanadas for work this morning (I love calabaza empanadas). When I got to the Golden Crown (about 7 am), the place was closed up tight - no signs of life. Sign on the door said "Closed Mondays". Their telephone message says that they're closed until January 8th. Has anyone out there in cybermundo heard anything?

I'm a major Golden Crown groupie. I gave their biscochitos as Christmas gifts (and the crowd went wild) and love the loaf of bread shaped like a turkey. I haven't tried the pizza yet, but the empanadas are to die for.

I agree with Sophie - the Bread Turkeys rock! So much better than boring old rolls.

I got the Bread Turkey for Christmas the year before last, and yes, it rocks! I was there for pizza last Sunday evening - the big meat with the green chili crust - delicious.

It's so funny that this post came back up - I was there on Friday afternoon and got green chile cheese bread to use as a grilled cheese base. The wife and I ate it for dinner. . .then breakfast on Saturday. . .then for dinner again (we had some afternoon snacks, but I think we would have gone with the green chile bread if we had been in the house!). Sadly, it is now finished. But I know where to get more!
