Duke City Fix

Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

My wife asked me to get her some empanadas for work this morning (I love calabaza empanadas). When I got to the Golden Crown (about 7 am), the place was closed up tight - no signs of life. Sign on the door said "Closed Mondays". Their telephone message says that they're closed until January 8th. Has anyone out there in cybermundo heard anything?

My fiancee was there last week to pick up a pizza and the place was hopping. Maybe they were late starting the place up today? (I hope! They are the only place I know of where I can get eggless bizcochitos)

Drove by last night after 9 and saw lights and such, so I think they're ok.

Love the concern, though! Sorry you missed your empanadas for breakfast.

The famous item is Green Chile Cheese Bread. Really fantastic.

The owner is famous world-over for his bread artistically shaped and baked. When you go in the first time, plan in at least 5 minutes to hear his stories and flip through his scrap book. Really amazing and fun. He can make anything that's less than 7 feet long (length of his oven), I think.

Empanadas, as noted above. Mexican wedding cookies, etc.

Pizza's good. 2 types dough -- one blue cornmeal and one green chile cheese, which is my favorite.

don't forget the biscochitos!! best in abq, in my opinion. plus, they always give you a couple of them when you pick up your pizza.

I know! That's awesome! First thing they do when you walk in is to hand you a bizcochito, that's great customer service. And the coffee's not too bad either (I think it's Seattle's Best, not Moon's I know but still decent).

thanks for letting me know ......i will have to go sooner than later!

and wow a biscochito when you walk in the door. I love local stores for their added touch.

when i moved to the neighborhood i got a coupon in the mail and the "as seen on food network" caught my eye. i knew i was going to have to check it out.

...green chile and tomato with green chile crust.

I think theirs are the best pizza I have ever had. Gourmet pizza - not NY - not Chicago - but their own very special pizza. It is a bit pricey and worth every penny. Here is the menu.

We don't buy any other pizza at all now if buying a whole pie. The crust I like is the Peasant dough, but they also have a green chili dough. I've never seen the blur corn dough describes below, but maybe they have it. I think their marble rye is special too, as are their bollios - in 2 sizes.

Definitely closed on Mondays though - I always forget and get disappointed.

Well, I'm stoked for two reasons:

1) I've never been to Golden Crown, and now I must try it.

2) "Cybermundo"! Que bueno! Sweet use of Spanglish.

They close for several weeks every winter. La Quiche did it too this year, they weren't open until January 15th. Having a small, family owned business seems stressful enough as it is, imagine not even having a few weeks to relax during the year... and what better time than when everyone ELSE in the city seems to be out of town (or at least cozied into their houses).

As if I haven't mentioned it enough--seems like three or four times now--Golden Crown is a must. I'm a little disappointed to see so many impersonal (almost rude) cashiers there these days. They had a great closely knit circle of employees for a long time (though I'm sure its all for the best...increase in business, more free time...?).

The coolest part about it is being able to drag your friends and relatives to this quaint gem, let the owner schmooze with grandma, etc.
