I saw on the Acoma site that visitors are allowed to drive through the valley and see the luminarias, but that the activities on the mesa are private. I recommend heading to Acoma for the feast day in September. Put it on your 2011 calendar.

Thanks so much Edith, when we went up last year, we went into the casino & asked a man that was working there- he said that it was open to the public for Christmas eve mass & dances & that we could have driven up to the top of the mesa, even though the sign said "no visitors beyond this point."

Either way, we're going to skip it- thanks anyway & merry christmas.

I know this discussion is from last year but, I have family in town this year and I'm wondering if the luminaria tour of Acoma is worth the trip. Has anyone been? Any comments? I went to the Sky City cultural center website and apparently they're closed for Christmas eve this year and they're open on Christmas day.

I never did find out any info about Acoma, so we came up to Taos for the Christmas eve. celebration at the Taos pueblo. It's like nothing I've ever experienced, just wonderful, we're doing it again this year since we ended up moving here in August! Absolutely worth the trip, but eat first or bring food, nothing was open after the event, except for Applebees & a few fast food places.

Yes, as per our friend who is Acoma,  visiting the mesa on the 23rd and 24rd are closed to the public but will be open for dances on the 27th and 28th.  Go if you can as they do the deer dance in the church of St. Estaban and it is pretty spectatular.  We are going on the 27th.

I have driven through the valley during the luminarias on the 24th, but its been some 25 years.  It too is spectacular as the luminarias go for miles along the road.  Come in from the west and head east toward the mesa. 

Yes, Taos Pueblo on Christmas Eve is SPECTACULAR with the burning of luminarias(bonfire size) on the plaza -  go early as parking can be difficult and dress warm.  They switch off between the deer dance (maybe buffalo) and the matachines(catholic based) on a yearly basis.
