For 10 years, we've done all of our landscaping ourselves.  But now with small kids, bad backs, a dog who has slowly destroyed our small lawn, and more available savings, we're ready to throw in the towel and hire a landscaper.  The primary need is to tear out our current lawn, fix the contouring, and re-sod. The dog has also developed a sizeable trench in the surrounding crusher fine along the wall where she runs her laps every day, so that needs to be filled.  We might consider adding a new layer of crusher fine to the entire backyard, since it's now all reverted to basic dirt, as well.  Then there are a few smaller projects like digging out the roots of dead shrubs, etc....

We tend to be fairly thrifty and hesitant to spend any more than necessary, but at the same time we put a premium on expertise and reliability when it comes to services.  For example, we want someone who can help us choose exactly the right variety of grass to suit our needs.  It's not a massive job, I'm guessing we only have 700 sq ft of grass (although perhaps another 4000 sq ft of dirt/crusher fine).

Any suggestions for local experts that do an exceptional job for a reasonable amount of money?  We're in the northeast heights.

Can't suggest landscapers - but more than likely, your dog is killing your grass - I recommend the third bullet inside:  http://diyhousetips.com/305/dog-urine-killing-grass/ - worked for my neighbor, who had a neighborhood cat peeing on her grass...
