It is absolutely incomprehensible to me why the sale of fireworks is allowed despite the extreme fire conditions in New Mexico. Rumor has it, the Socorro bosque fire was caused by fireworks (KOB TV). Why do these businesses have license to operate during our explosive conditions? What sort of lobby do they have?

Yes, there are many kinds of fireworks that have been banned in Bernalillo County. Look up into the night sky on any July 4th and you can see how well that ban has worked.
Which is why officials and this discussion have been focused on a state ban. It's already been pointed out that piecemeal bans don't work if you can just drive ten miles to get your illegal goods elsewhere.
I get and support that all fireworks should be banned for the time being. But, you have to look at what others are pointing out. Marijuana is banned and yet it is still pretty big business.
...and marijuana is banned from coast to coast and most other countries as well.
Agreed re: mary jane. This should be about an emergency response to an emergency situation.
I'm curious. How do you think a state ban would be any better. Does the governor now have power to regulate sales on reservations? Unless she can get them to stop, there really is no such thing as a state wide ban. Then if that happens. How are you going to stop people from bringing them in from other states. Do you really think that anyone who currently scoffs at the law by using, already, illegal fireworks is going to be deterred by the fact that now they have to go to another state? This is just another 'let's make a law for this' non-solution.
Hey you communists, don't you dare take away my ability to blow up communist made fireworks.

Dude. You crack me up.

I witnessed a tree on fire near Kelly's Brew Pub on my way home about noon today.

I guess I'll voluntarily abstain from lighting any fireworks this year. (But I'll still insist on lighting a few smoke bombs!)

Some genius thought it was a good idea to light fireworks in the Bosque.  Thankfully my friend Miguel had the wherewithal to notify the authorities as soon as he saw the flames, and they were able to put it out.

Many thanks to Miguel from saving us from more smoke and ash.

You have an interesting way of thinking. Someone does something that is already illegal (going into the Bosque, lighting fireworks ( and probably illegal ones)) and you want to solve the situation by creating laws that prevent people from selling legal and safe fireworks to law abiding citizens.

I suppose you also think it would be a good idea to prevent vendors from selling matches and lighters because some idiot will go into the bosque and light a fire...Oh wait we already had that.  Oh by the way have you bothered to really look into how the fires have gotten started... downed powerlines, hot exhausts, smoldering campfires, arsonists, and dead squirrels. The same suspects we have every year. No drought necessary.
