My 11-year-old daughter wants to volunteer at a local animal shelter - walking dogs, playing with them, feeding/grooming them. As her mother, I would do it with her. Does anyone have suggestions? I would like it to be a positive experience for her, rather than one that saddens her as to the plight of the animals. 

We live in the foothills, so the closer, the better.
