Laura Sanchez will be discussing and signing Killer Miracle, just published by ABQ Press, on Saturday March 15, 1pm to 3pm, at Treasure House Books & Gifts in Old Town at 2012 S. Plaza NW.
Killer Miracle is a murder mystery set in northern New Mexico. It’s about art and faith, about drugs and development, about kinship, power plays and surviving on the edges, about conniving women and deceiving men, and about a past that hasn’t died.
When miraculous images begin appearing in the town of La Cuenta, New Mexico, many devout villagers see them as marks of God’s favor. Albuquerque architect Gwen Callendar, doing field work near the town, thinks the images are a cynical scam. All of them are wrong.
The images bring crowds of pilgrims and reporters to La Cuenta, but the PR carnival turns dark when the town’s most revered citizen, elderly santero Emilio Cordova, is found dead of gunshot wounds. La Cuenta police chief Ruben Lopez detains Gwen Callendar’s lover as a suspect, pulling her into the investigation along with Elena Cordova, Emilio’s beloved grandniece.
Gwen, Elena and Ruben struggle through a murderous maze in their efforts to save not only their own dreams, but the future of La Cuenta itself. Their journey leads through one of New Mexico’s oldest and most fascinating cultural traditions, the religious art of the saint makers.
