Duke City Fix

Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

Yeah, I won the Laurie Anderson tickets and begged friends to go, but no one was available or, even worse, knew about this amazing artist. Well, their loss - the crowd at the Kimo was treated to the very personal stories about the adventures of Laurie Anderson - she knows how to tell the tale. From being called "Ugly with Jewels" to taking a dive that ended badly to working at McD's to ending up at the North Pole (well, sorta) and hanging out with the Amish, we heard spellbinding tales of this adventurer. My favorite tale was about her taking her dog LollaBelle for a walk in the woods, and her dog discovering that her boundaries to guard were about to increase by 180 degrees that day, and now she would have to be on the guard from threats from above (vultures were attacking her), and that's how New Yorkers felt after 9/11 - that their boundary of threats had now increased to include the sky. Wow - great analogy! Here's the opening to that story:

And afterwards, we got to meet and talk with her at the 516, and she was gracious and kind to everyone who wanted to talk to her. And her film was great! I wish I had seen it at the planetarium.

I have to say that it's been a great two weeks for songwriters in Albuquerque - first Neko Case (ok, I threw that pix in) turned in a great performance at the always interesting (and crowded) Sunshine, Jonathan Richman was a fun trilingual troubadour at the Launchpad, and the week was crowned with the Laurie Anderson art event at the Kimo and the Planetarium. Three different styles, four different reviews. Great stuff. Pretty soon I'll start believing those top ten city reviews....

Thanks for the kind words Shotsie. It was such a fun week!

I love your photo collage? Can we steal it for our web page?

More photos up now at http://ampconcerts.org/amp_photos.html

Yeah, Neal - no problem, borrow away. I tried to edit the collage a bit to exclude Neko, but I couldn't find a way of doing just that edit (Picasa is friendly, but not that friendly), without re-arranging everything else. I've included a photo of you, Suzanne? and Laurie, plus a snip of the concert that was supposed to be in the post.

Thanks again, Neal, for putting together a great week of shows (and using the Launchpad for early bird shows is a great idea, btw - it's a more comfortable place to hang than the Cooperage.)
