Duke City Fix

Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

I've been having this conversation over on Facebook, and decided I needed some expert advice:

As the weather improves, we need to know: What are the best patio dining experiences in town? Let's assume that food and ambience both count (which, for instance, rules out Kelly's in my mind -- love the crowd but the food is sub-meh).

I like:
Geckos
El Patio
Scalo / Il Bar
Seasons
Monte Vista Fire Station
Flying Star (Rio Grande & Juan Tabo)
Church Street Cafe

What else is out there? What have I forgotten?

Definitely skip Kelly's and head 300 feet west to the Korean Barbeque House. Beer, Sake, Sushi, cooking with fire. Mmmm.

Tell me more... a buddy of mine was musing about eating there tonight. I'm interested.

What's the 1-Hour Sushi deal all about? Does it break the Quality/Quantity barrier?

Is the 1 hour sushi deal the same as the all-you-can-eat sushi deal? We tried the latter when some family was in town last year. We quickly discovered none of our stomachs were big enough to make the price (~$20)break even , much less come out ahead. YMMV.

The outdoor seating area has tables with burners in the center- where they'd normally bring you kalbi or bulgogi or whatever sizzling on a platter, you can instead grill it yourself. Or you could just sit out there and order things the way you would inside. Or go wild and grill your nigiri. Ack.

Hey, it's a little late on the topic for last weekend...but for future reference on Sushi & Sake and the 1 hour deal;

A year ago it was only worth it if you were feeding very hungry teenagers, wrestlers, or mabye lumberjacks.

It wasn't that special but not as bad as it sounds! The sushi chefs are old school trained, it is owned and operated by 3 Korean siblings; the nice brother, the nice sister, and the scary sister.
FYI: In the Korean side you can order kim chee to go. They rub and ferment on site!!! It is a long process and they do it so well.

The sushi side: since they have added the Chefs Specials -which are very special!- it is so worth it.
You chose from the regular sushi menu (nigiri pieces/rolls) plus 1 chef special.
It also includes udon noodle soup ( in my opinion they have the best and only authentic in the city),
plus all the tempuras/teryaki dishes/miso soup and salad.

I would recommend just 1 order of udon noodle soup to share because it's big-
(regularly $7 or $8 on the menu)
Not included is their seaweed salad and sashimi, and the fish is cut to smaller porportions.

We like it because we do have a teenager who loves sushi and is always hungry!
And we can order our favorites or really experiment. You can share so if everyone orders a chef special,
1 other roll, a few nigiri... that right there is over $20. Remember to order miso soup-traditional to aid digestion.

They don't put a timer down...you order, eat, and then if you want, order once more.
Go hungry for sushi~indulge a bit. But be careful-you will get charged for excessive leftover!
Don't forget to invite a lumberjack or perpetually starving teenager.

The last I checked, you could not order sushi from the patio. Does anyone know if this is still true?
When you try it, slamwagon, let me know what you think!

Since this post I've become obsessed with the Korean BBQ and love their patio. I think I'm there once a week?

Right on. It's our go-to place before seeing something at the Guild.

Also, if you like ''em, there's Duran's Central Pharmacy, Mannies, my back yard, and possibly Sahara. Have they put anything under that awning they built late last year? It must be time to go visit them again...

O'Neill's way up on Central actually has a pretty nice little patio, with a fountain.

and smoking, too... yummy...

not only does the food and ambience rule out Kelly's but so does the beer and view.

unless you like looking at huge out of place apt/condo buildings instead of the sandias.

marble brewery has a nice patio but that's pretty much beer only besides a couple of munchie items they have.

Man - too University-centric - try these in North Valley -

Casa de Benavidez
El Pinto
Flying Star Café on Rio Grande (also Juan Tabo, and downtown, if those seats just outside, 2nd floor count)
JohnDhi’s BBQ
Sophia’s Place
