Duke City Fix

Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

I need some leaf peeping recommendations! I have Fouth of July Canyon on my list but didn't realize its 4 hours away...although I'm sure it is worth the drive I was just wondering if there are any other locations nearby where I can get my fix? and when the best time to go would be?
Thanks all!

Fourth of July Capground is more like 90 minutes so don't stress it.

Other good sites:

Drive to the top of Sandia Crest and walk the rim, good aspen color can be seen over the edge at various spots. There's also some nice hikes on the way up the road. The stuff higher up turns first, so start there then work your way down as the season goes on. Should be starting in a couple weeks.

Santa Fe ski basin. Great Aspen viewing.

Take the 550 out toward Jemez springs, pass through Jemez Springs, around to Los Alamaos. Often some good aspen viewing, plus it's just a really nice drive.

In town, visit the nature center and walk or ride on the bike path, see the bosque turn colors.

Good luck!

Just outside the town of Tajique, South of Tijeras. Read this post. Or this one. Here's a zoomed in map of just west if the town of Tajiaque, I'm sure you can zoom out and manipulate it to your liking.

I rode my bicycle up the Crest Rd. yesterday. The aspen are close but not quite ready for prime time yet. Give them another week or two. Fourth of July Canyon is great. Take a lunch and do the hike to the top. It is spectacular up there and not as crowded. It is about 4 miles though. But you walk through some amazing color just before you top out.

I don't think Tajique or Fourth of July Canyon are 4 hours away from ABQ. There just on the other side of the Manzano Mountains.

I was thinking of doing Fourth of July Canyon with a friend this weekend. Will the colors be out? If not there, does anyone know if the Aspen are out in Valles Caldera?

The fall color chairlift in the Santa Fe mountains is a fun way to see the aspens.
