Not that I'm spending time on the base or anything, but I've heard from friends who do that the dining options are woefully limited. On-base there's a cafeteria and fast food. Immediately off base more fast food, the Costco pizza & hotdog stand, and a Chiles.
What secret awesome places to eat are near Kirtland?
"near" Kirtland becomes more subjective depending on the mood of the crowd. We find ourselves often at Chen's on Juan Tabo, and more often than I care to think about, at JR's BBQ.
haha, on base, we refer to that "mountain cafeteria" as Bunker Burger, no matter how many times it changes management. My current opinion of their food these days is really low. I used to eat there weekly, now, I haven't been back since November. My food was gastly.
Cool thing about base is the many gates to different parts of the SE. Truman gate gets you down by the Yale, Applebees and Waffle House are good. Louisiana gate dumps you at Gibson. and Atrisqueño pointed out Samurai and Copper Canyon, which i confirm are good. There is a new chicago style pizza joint right next to Starbucks that seems decent.
Up Louisiana on Central, I recommend Que Hounge and Cafe Trang for Vietnamese fare. And just west of there Cafe De Lat and Bankok.
Out the Wyoming gate on Zuni is a new Pho Noodle restaurant. I ate there 2 weeks ago and it was delicious. Keep going up Wyoming and just past the freeway is Thai Tip, Cafe Istanbul, and El Norteno. All three I highly recommend.
Not so much on Eubank. Popeyes, Del Taco, and Panda Express. Farther north is a great new Indian place, Taj Palace. These are the only places I go there.
Juan Tabo offers Chens and way farther north, Bamboo House and Garcias.
I second this. All the restaurants the Duke City Fix writes about in Nob Hill or Central in general are only a five minute drive from base's west side.
When my husband used to work on base he would frequent Paisano's on Eubank, Thai Ginger at Katheryn & San Mateo, Thai Orchid on Central and Washington, and Saigon 2000 on Zuni and San Mateo - where you can also get your car emmission tested! Yeah!

At San Pedro and Zuni is Pho #1 and Lindo Mexico (excellent Mexican food, cash only last time I went).
Just out the Carlisle gate is El Sabor (in the little strip mall with the pawn shop). Excellent Mexican food. Inexpensive.
Up Louisiana across from Ta Lin is May Cafe. Very tasty.
I'm afraid the nearest thing I like out of the Wyoming gate is Dos Hermanos at Northeastern (I think) and Wyoming. It's behind the Furrs cafeteria.
Out Eubank you can get to Dion's at Tramway and Central pretty easily. If you happen to be one of the folks who likes Weck's there's one out there as well that is on Juan Tabo.
i was just talking about this yesterday. there is cervantes, which not stellar food makes up for it in ambience. and has anyone checked out the bbq-oyster place on louisiana and gibson?? also my sister says the pupuseria on gibson and san mateo isn't bad but that place changes every 2 months so who knows.
If you like Mexican food, there are some nice hole-in-the-wall places on Central. La Barca on the north side of Central just east of Wyoming is good. There is also a no-name Mexican place on the north side of Central near Moon that is good.
