Does anyone have recent experience with a long-distance mover?  We are moving our household goods from the Seattle area to ABQ next month and are starting to get bids.  A personal recommendation is always best.  Thanks!

ABF U-Pack, if you are willing to load/unload the containers yourself.  I hired some day laborers to do the heavy lifting, and had ABF deliver my containers to a storage locker here, since we didn't have housing lined up yet.  Worked out great.

The company is similar to PODS in that they just drop off the shipping containers and you load/unload them, but their rates were much better when we moved here earlier this year.  Definitely the way to go if cost factors into your decision.

I'd suggest not using United

Thanks - this confirms my taking United off my list.

Looking at Wheaton at this point....

I used Wheaton when I moved here...  they showed up a few days later than they had said, and then tried to charge me extra for the alleged extra weight.  I had a binding quote (a "not to exceed" price guarantee) so the extra charge was a no-go.  (they should have known that)

The goods arrived in tact, nothing missing, and the driver was professional and nice, so I would give them a B-

Thanks for the feedback on Wheaton....

I'm begining to see this is pretty much a crap shoot......as each of the moving companies have their local reps.  And while one local rep for a particualr co. can be good in one city, they can be not-so-good in others.

at least I know that Wheaton won't use movers from the local day labor pool....

And the "Rights and Responsibilities" handbook they give you is enough to make me drink the last of my single malt scotch!
