Duke City Fix

Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

I will be spending the summer in Peru, collecting oral histories and conducting a poetry workshop after which I will fly back to Maryland, have one day to pack my car, and I will be driving out to Albuquerque early August to start grad school and continue my project. I have only been to New Mexico once, for three days, so I have to find a place to live and find a roomate, all from here. I don't really know the neighborhoods, but I wanted to look for a really neat and interesting neibhorhood to live in- though I will have a car, I prefer somewhere that is still atleast biking distance from UNM. What is an average rent cost for an apartment atleat one roomate? Any suggestions would help! thanks

hey anna,
my partner and I live in the silver hill neighborhood, which is a block south of unm campus (yale to sycamore and central to wilcox, if you have a map). I'm a five minute walk from school, which is great, as I'm a grad student who seems to always need to make one more trip to the library. we have some good neighbors and bad, with a lot of rentals around us, some with lots of folks in a bigger house and some with one person in a back house. you'll find that those "mother-in-law" houses are popular in abq. and some of them are wonderful places to live. you can have some privacy and a shared yard, but you have the feeling of safety that comes with knowing there are people within shouting distance.

we essentially live on the border of the silver hill and university heights neighborhoods (often affectionately referred to as the student ghetto) and there are tons of great restaurants, coffeehouses, and shops around, to say nothing of the outpost performance space, the peace and justice center, the tamarind institute, and other cultural resources. the very best thing to me is that my life is comfortably lived on foot or bicycle, with a few bus trips up or down central to nob hill and downtown. I'm selling my neighborhood pretty hard, so I do have to mention that we and some of our neighbors have been broken into over the 5 years I've been here and had bikes or electronics stolen. (of course, my sister lived in my house for 6 years before I did and never got broken into). break-ins happen, particularly in the summer it seems, and I recommend renter's insurance anywhere you live in the city. I also happen to really enjoy hanging out in nob hill and downtown, so I agree with all the commentors who encourage you to check those places out too. good luck and welcome to abq! some of us find it to be a pretty great place to live.

You should live near UNM in the Nob Hill area. It is walking distance to a lot of nice places. You could probably find a place for $500-700 a month (obviously it depends on size/location/how nice it is)
I think you will like that area. Do not go to any other parts of town because you will be driving all the time!
Buena suerte con tus estudios!
