It's hardly the usual crowd -- the Occupy Burque demonstration going on right now is full of 20somethings and hipster UNM students seemingly lamenting a lack of economic opportunity and the growing inequality in our country.

The signs they held marching along Central read:

"I am not your serf."

"Money for people's needs, not war."

"Banks too big to fail. People the right size?"

"My tax dollars paid for those tasers."

Here are a few photos I snapped this afternoon. Video by cosmomow below...

More insult-throwing. Are there any reasons at all you read this site besides the chance to name-call in political discussions? It doesn't seem like it...how tedious.
I who did i name call Phil? Don't see anything there thats beyond disagreement...i think Kenny deserved it a little on the warm side.
I don't take any offense with your reply to me. In fact, I don't intend to respond to it at all other than to let it stand on it's own.
You contribute nothing to this site beyond political scrapping. It gets boring.
I have to admit, this is like an itchy scab that begs to be picked. So one of the big demands is to put an end to "corporate greed". I would like to hear an explanation of what exactly constitutes "corporate greed". Is it only limited to corporations? Is there also "sole proprietor greed"? What about "not for profit greed" because those orgs usually have highly paid directors and such. And at what monetary value is the line drawn where greed begins and not-so-greedy ends? How would the occupiers suggest policing this?
Run...you haven't watched the footage or interviews from these things if you're really expecting an intelligent answer to that question.

There are several interesting things about this protest against Wall Street worth noting.  The first thing is that it is directed at Wall Street and not at Congress, the President or Washington.  The feeling at root is that the financial geniuses, who caretake investments for every small bank and credit union through huge aggregated transactions, have proved themselves capable of unbelievable stupidity.

Really what is probably at the bottom of it may be that the complexity of the national financial infrastructure, interwoven as it is with the whole international system, is beyond the capactiy of the Cro Magnon brainbox. The thousands of people on Wall Street and elsewhere who have been operating as if they were above ordinary mortals can no longer be trusted to be.  They screw up and whole populations and nations suffer terrible consequences.

What policies are needed to create a proper balance between government regulation and free market capitalism?  That question will be argued out probably for a very long time to come.

Meanwhile the protests, while inscrutably passionate in addressing existential angst (and not specifics,) are expressing a valid and important sense that somewhere, somehow, something we used to take for granted as basic to our world has gone into a horrible TILT mode.  This can't be ignored and we cannot assume that business as usual offers the right solutions.  The grip those who created our economic tilting on the brink have on the system seems dangerous.

We are probably talking less about this year's political quick fixes and more about the near term in the evolution of human society.  Not a simple issue.

Someone has to start somewhere.

This thread is like a train wreck, I can't stop looking at it. I'm hoping there are a few occupiers who are also veterans, also young people, also people my age (not quite boomers, not gen x). I hope they are all registered to vote. I hope the occupiers rile up more people than just folks like Lebowski, here. I hope that not everyone gets their American history from Rush Limbaugh.
Im glad you're so typical...makes for an easy conversation. The fact that you actually think this is a populist and diverse movement means you only listen to NPR and the Daily Show or MSNBC.

Rush...of course...opinions contrary to yours couldn't be organic...that would mean you aren't automatically right. That's standard liberal right there...or maybe Keith Olberman taught you that. Liberals generally do not like different opinions...we welcome the debate because most people in the US disagree with your viewpoints. Thats why your candidates always have to sound conservative to get elected nationally.
Sorry, can't afford cable or satellite or kool-aid.

I don't know if it's true that "liberals generally do not like different opinions," but they certainly can't be worse than your tone deafness in this thread and others. Of course, I can speak for myself, and I can say that I follow a variety of sources, which include your afore mentioned Rush and other right-wing talkies. And that's the problem I alluded to in an earlier post: most of your talking points are pasted and copied from those right-wing types, which makes it very difficult to "discuss" anything with you here, because any time anybody brings up something that would require you to go off the script to respond, you default to painting everyone who doesn't fall in line with you as this bizarre characterture of hippies and freeloaders.

And before you claim to know me, I should point out that I agree with some of the criticisms leveled at these protests. Unfortunately, nowadays it's becoming more and more difficult to have a nuanced perspective, which means it's becoming near impossible to actually talk about real solutions.

There is nothing like personal attacks and mass generalizations to stimulate a fulfilling conversation/debate - well done! Is it possible to speak of substantive issues, or is this just middle school social antics? Nothing in this post has any substance as far as a position on or proposed solution to the subject at hand - the status of our national economy. You say you welcome debate, but where are your opinions? All I see throughout this thread are insults - "you people are like this, this is no different form the 60s, liberals are losers, etc.
