We are having a new house built (on the West side) and are considering whether to have a water softener installed.  I'd like to hear from people with experience as to the pros and cons.  Thanks!

In Tucson, I placed mine just on the intake to the water heater - that way, the shower, the dishwasher and the washing machine (depending upon the cycle - if you used warm or hot water for the wash cycle) use soft water (more suds!), and you won't be drinking or flushing or killing your plants with excess sodium.  Saves salt, too! (Or potassium)
