Soon to be Newbie in need of honest opinions and suggestions, please :-)

Hello All :-)
Ill be in albuquerque in the begining of june. I've been trying to get an idea for apartments there. I've got the location figured out, hopefully. Now it just a matter of what apartment complex. This is hopefully where you all will come in handy (everyone has been very helpful thus far on here and city data and I appreciate it all) I'm going to b workin in jefferson commons. Ill have my car (as long as it makes the cross country drive) so transportation not an issue. Based on a prior discussion I created I believe I'm going to be looking into the nob hill area. I'm a young adult so someplace that I can meet people around my age would be great. Now I'm looking to pay 600 or less, one bedroom/bath will be fine. I keep coming across Cinnamon Tree Apartments in my searches I'm in love with the one bedroom loft layout they have. Does anyone have any feedback on these apartments? R they safe? Clean? Good or bad area? Also does anyone know of any other apartments that offer loft style layouts like this one? Id really like a loft layout but I'm kinda thinking if I just look for these I'm gonna narrow my search field too much, so if anyone has a recomendation for an apartment complex I should look into I would greatly appreciate it. :-) I super excited to be coming out there, as long as I can find a new home before I start work so I can get settled.
Thankyou in advance for the suggestions.

West of Carlisle will definitely keep you closer to the goodies but I wouldn't go east of San Mateo. Houses are very affordable to rent hear so if you end meeting some good potential roomies I would go for it. I would stay close to the Central avenue corridor although there are good spots off of Lomas blvd in the UNM and downtown area as well, especially if you like to ride a bike.

I'm looking at this thread because I'm trying to help my son find a place, and he's interested in an "apartment complex" with a pool, gym, laundry, etc.  He grew up in Albuquerque.  I also noticed most of the reviews online were horrifically bad, but one wonders why someone who had/is having a good experience would have any reason to go online to write a review, compared to someone who is disgruntled.  I wonder about the skewed population sample... So thanks for the info. here.

I did want to weigh in about Cornerpost Company, that manages rental properties in the UNM area.  We had a very bad experience with them.

My daughter rented a cottage at the back of a house southwest of University and Central.  It was a funky, but cute place and she knew the guys in the front house and it was convenient to UNM.  We had some concerns that the electricity wasn't to code, the lock on the door was inadequate (you could reach through the security door and unlock it!) and the roof developed a leak.  So we replaced the lock with one that worked, repaired the roof and did various other improvements to the place.

At some point, the owner hired Cornerpost to manage the place, and when our daughter moved out, they kept her deposit.  The place was much cleaner than when she moved in and, in fact, had a lot of improvements that we did ourselves.  We helped her scrub the place when she moved out.  Their reason for keeping her deposit was that they wanted to put a better lock on the door and make other improvements and they would not take her word for it, that the place was much better when she left, compared to when she moved in.

I wrote to them to complain, and they wrote back - I read it as sarcastic - saying something like "I'm glad you are such good parents to help your daughter, but that was voluntary on your part..."  Because we didn't want to hire a lawyer, we had to just eat it.  As a young UNM student, working fulltime, my daughter was very discouraged by this experience, as were we.

Anyway, looking forward to more recommendations for apartment complexes here.

Try the apartments on the NE corner of University and Gibson - they are almost brand new and a lot of students live there.  My neighbor's son (who is going to UNM)  lives there and he seems to like it.

This is a good resource for small rental listings in the UNM area

This post in nearly a year old. I'm assuming AJ has already had the chance to enjoy the Albuquerque area and form her opinion on the best living area.  I'd be curious what she ended up doing though.

I can't say anything about the Cinnamon Apts., but I used to live on 14th Street and Lead in a townhouse built in the 1960s and I loved that area.  I could walk to downtown easily, even during the night, and I wasn't fearful.  The one time I was freaked out was when I used to run down Tingley Beach before it got spiffed up.  I was walking down the street behind KOB (it was often devoid of any signs of life) and this guy came out of nowhere behind me and started asking questions.  I had met him earlier on the Tingley Beach path when he stopped to ask how far the distance was around the water. He wasn't a "regular" on the paths and something seemed odd about him. Anyway, he had been hiding and waiting for me when I came onto Iron and all the alarms and whistles went off in my head.  I got out of there as fast as I could and ran around for a while in case he was still watching.  I didn't want him to see where I lived.
