A few friends and I have several small children each and would like to get ideas for stuff to do on the 4th of July and where to watch the fireworks at night. Any ideas?
I don't think the Isotopes are in town on the fourth, so there probably won't be fireworks there. However, there is always an impressive show at Balloon Fiesta Park.
Also, I'm not sure if they still do this, but when I was younger there always used to be a fireworks display at Tanoan Country Club. Now, if you're opposed to entering Tanoan and hanging out around those snooty rich jerks, you could just park in the Hoffmantown Church lot and get a great view.
I think Kirtland AFB also puts on a display, but as I remember it is pretty weak.
Rio Rancho also puts on a good show, if you're on the West side. But I second Balloon Fiesta Park - it's only a dollar or two, there's kids shows and lots of bands to listen to. Bring chairs and sun shade though - there's no trees, but lots of grass for the kids to run in. The shuttle busses will take you into the show area at the entrance. I recommend going about an hour before sunset, unless you want lots of sunshine and no shade.
Also, you might want to take the kids to Shady Lake earlier in the day - y'all can fish in the shade (rent the equipment - it's cheap) and enjoy the plants and lakes - parking can be a little tough, so try to take only one vehicle. http://www.shadylakes.com/
