Permalink Reply by Joseph Fulton on December 22, 2012 at 6:42pm Trainsignal is among the best. Another place you might want to check is the Petri IT Forums. Dan Petri does an excellent job of running a forum for those in IT and seeking various certifications from CompTIA, Microsoft, Cisco and others.
Avoid the braindumps and TestKingz. I used to administer tests for IT personnel at a PC manufacturer in Cleveland, OH and we found that we could tell those who used braindumps and such pretty quickly. They couldn't put a PC together or set up a simple network.
If you have any leads on somewhere in Albuquerque for someone with a bit of MS/SystemBuilding/Tech experience might be able to get their foot in the door let me know. The wife are planning on moving up after tax season but are willing to do so earlier if a decent opportunity pops up.
Permalink Reply by Tina Caton on December 22, 2012 at 8:10pm Sadly, I would say jobs here are few and far between.
Permalink Reply by Joseph Fulton on December 23, 2012 at 1:34am Well, I can still work for my current employer from Albuquerque. It would just be a work-from-home situation.
Permalink Reply by Tina Caton on December 23, 2012 at 9:18am Everybody I know who lives in Abq comfortably works for an out of state employer. That is actually ideal. If you'd like to start a local "work from home IT support group" I already have a list of people to start
Petri IT is the single best website for answers. It was the only resource for me when I was struggling with a "Ghost Domain" many years ago.
Recently I have enjoyed RunAs Radio, good podcast.
Permalink Reply by Joseph Fulton on December 25, 2012 at 7:25pm I have been with my employer 7 1/2 years and my skillset is drifting away from IT. I still am quite good at the network and active directory configuration, but if I keep drifting too much longer those skills will fade.
Considering that the latest family of OS'es still utilizes much the same underpinnings as Vista/7 I'm going to go for a Windows 8 ticket and see what Trainsignal has in the way of upcoming training.
I like the "Work From Home IT Support Group" idea.
Permalink Reply by Tina Caton on December 26, 2012 at 9:58am Win 8 sounds like a great plan. I have all their 2008 server videos so I am focusing there. One day I'd like to do an Exchange environment.
Many local jobs are on Base and IT positions are with contractors like Lockheed. Otherwise it would be government and hospitals. Lacking corporate headquarters big business is less of a factor. I hear Denver has a huge IT market.
Permalink Reply by Joseph Fulton on January 5, 2013 at 8:44am Well, since MS says no Win 8 tests until September, it's Windows 7.
Permalink Reply by Tina Caton on January 5, 2013 at 9:35am Many local businesses are talking about moving from WXP to W7. Many are on W7. It will be a long time before W8 will be useful in ABQ.
Permalink Reply by Joseph Fulton on January 5, 2013 at 5:57pm So I guess, Win 7 it is.
BTW, any opinions on CBT Nuggets?
Permalink Reply by Tina Caton on January 5, 2013 at 6:32pm Lil pricey for me - if they had a monthly like Lynda I would try it.
My friend the Exchange master swears by the MS online training.
I tried their Exchange collection and was actually most impressed.
Permalink Reply by Joseph Fulton on March 1, 2013 at 9:33am They have a monthly now. It's like $99/month.
Permalink Reply by Joseph Fulton on March 1, 2013 at 9:21am The move is on. The wife and I will be settled in Albuquerque before the first of April.
I'll have Server+ out of the way and yes, working on Win7. Where are you at in your Win 7 studies?
