Now that we basically have all the 900-series buses in service, and the 6900-series buses have also recently began service, I was wondering, what do you think could be in the future of ABQ RIDE's fleet?
I know that the 300s are aging, and they will eventually need a replacement. I know that ABQ RIDE was supposed to by 20 additional DE40LFRs with stimulus money, however, the plan was scrapped as there were concerns that it wouldn't be beneficial to the local economy.
However, in 2010 and beyond, I think we could perahps see more orders for New Flyer hybrid buses. ABQ RIDE currently has options for 68 40-foot hybrid buses and 94 60-foot hybrid buses. While I don't know would ABQ RIDE do with 94 60-foot hybrid buses, I think the 68 40-foot hybrid buses makes sense. They can be used to replace the 300s and add more buses into the fleet.
I would actually like to see ABQ RIDE order the New Flyer Xcelsior. The Xcelsior weighs 10% less than the DE40LFR and has a greater seating capacity. Other nice features include larger windows, skylights, and LED headlights. I think that would be a great replacement for the 300s.
Also, keep in mind that Cummins will be coming out with their new EPA 2010 engines starting in 2010, which will have selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to reduce NOx emissions. Currently, the 6400- and 6600-series buses have EPA 2004 Caterpillar C9 engines, and the 700-, 900-, and 6900-series buses have EPA 2007 Cummins ISL engines.
