Duke City Fix

Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

Turner road is closed between lomas and copper due to a water main break. I assume the bus is detouring on Tramway (like the Sunday route).

Residents say the road was closed last night. However, there was no email notification of the route change to those of us on the ABQ RIDE notification list, nor was 311 notified. (They were left in the dark until almost 7:00 a.m. -- and then I suspect it was only citizens calling in that helped them find out.) All in all, an inauspicious start for a new administration. I'm hoping this is just a matter of the new guys not yet in control of the processes.

The detour is on their website now. The bus continues up Lomas to the Sunrise apartments, but then takes a right on Hupmobile and winds through side streets back to Turner a few blocks before Copper.

It also will detour here Thursday and Friday next week.

The bus was still running down Turner when I went home last night at 6:15pm, but the road was probably closed shortly after.

I think the lack of notification problem is probably due to most of the administration working 8-5 rather than post-Greg issues.

I agree: your 8-5 explanation is the most likely. The water main break was certainly unexpected and happened after hours. I anticipate that, next Wednesday, we'll get email notifications and 311 will know from the website (if from nowhere else) what is going on should anyone call.

Still, I'm assuming the drivers knew this morning before they got to Turner that the street was closed. Maybe not. Maybe it was the drivers who first notified ABQ RIDE Turner was closed. But if they did know the road was closed, ABQ RIDE knew. And if ABQ RIDE knew, 311 should have been notified.

Agreed.

Over the past week, I've heard from other riders to the effect that the water main was not a sudden emergency, but had been looked at periodically for a week prior to the actual fix. And my assumption that the first drivers knew about the detour was incorrect. Turns out they were as surprised as the rest of us.

You are right it was leaking for a few days or so prior to the fix. Stu and I first noticed it when we got back from vacation in San Francisco on Jan 2nd. Because there was snow on the ground that was melting, and the water on the road went up Turner past Monte Largo, we weren't sure if it was the water main or melt. We watched it for a few more days every night when we walked the dogs and Stu finally called 311 to report it on the 5th.

BTW, kudos to the water company. They did a great job, from having gallon jugs of water to hand out once the water was shut off to working as hard as they did. They were there digging and repairing and patching the road until about 3am. They also informed 311.
