Welcome drumming enthusiasts!

I got into drumming through serendipity -- watching a nomadic musical group called The Psalters play at Solid Grounds coffee house. They had awesome drums that I could feel in the middle of my chest. I'd been getting notification of a drum circle for years, and never intended to attend -- but after seeing the Psalters, decided to give it a try. Went once and was hooked. Now I own LOTS of drums and hand percussion and still attend this drum circle -- led by Giselle Felicia Vivian at Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center the third Friday of every month. I've had the great pleasure of playing drum and shakers in a Peace Concert at Unity Spiritual Center (Candelaria east of Eubank) last fall and at several labyrinth walks at New Life Presbyterian Church (5540 Eubank, 1/2 mile north of Spain). And, of course regaling my neighbors with drumbeats when I practice!

John: I never did any drumming before, but the Drum Circle tonight was over the top! Not only that, but all the folks there were so welcoming and friendly that I'm sure that I will be back big time. I think my wife, Ginnie, my return with me as well. So thanks for putting up the ABQ Drumming Group on this website and advertising this Drum Circle. Now I gotta check out your resources and shop for a drum. Hope to se ya again. Ken.

Hey Ken! It was good to have you join us tonight! As you can see, you don't have to be a seasoned drummer to just jump in and join the rhythm. I look forward to seeing you and Ginnie in July! -- Lesley

Thanks, Lesley; but unfortunately July isn't going to work for us because of other commitments we already have for that time. Do you know of any other drum circles that I can play with in the meantime? I don't think I can go for two months without. Ken.

Ken,
Join the new_mexico_drums and abqdrumcircle groups on Yahoo. Info is in the NM Drumming Resources discussion. Announcements will be broadcast to those groups.

I don't know of another regular drum circle at this point in ABQ. I'm hoping we'll be able to pull together some impromptu drumming through the groups.

This is the info I have on Reiki drumming tomorrow night. I've never attended this before so I can't tell you what it's like, but it sounds interesting! It's at Sacred Journeys at 1919 San Mateo Blvd.

Reiki Drumming: Experience the release of REIKI energy while drumming. Drumming reminds our body of its ideal vibratory rate, which is in harmony with the pulse of the Earth and the Universal flow of Creation. Medical research indicates that group drumming boosts the immune system. Bring your drum or we have some to provide.

Jackie Addis and Kelly Deschaine are certified REIKI Masters and REIKI Drum Practitioners.
Cost: $ 10

Thanks for that info, Lesley; but I'd sure like to have my own drum the next time I play. Giselle cautioned me to take a month (until her next circle) to make a purchase; I supposed that's OK advice, but I want to have one by 6:00 pm tomorrow night! I really liked the looks of that tubano at the circle Friday nite but it's probably not a good idea to order one up (they don't seem to be in stock locally) until I've had a chance to play one. So maybe in the meantime I'll just get a little 8 or 10 inch djembe to tide me over; it appears from your comments and those of others that one can have more than one drum. Perhaps, even, one can't have too many drums. . . .

There's not such thing as too many drums! Only too little paycheck to pay for them all.
http://www.x8drums.com is a great online resource. They carry a wide variety of drums. Inexpensive starter drums to very expensive imports.

In the meantime, I'd let you borrow mine. I have a 14" Remo djembe (all synthetic) and a 10" Toca Freestyle (natural head with a PVC body). Maybe if I ask real nice, Lesley will bring them there. I won't be able to attend. This will give you a chance to try out a few drums before you decide what you want to buy/order.
