The Los Alamos Arts Council presents the annual Los Alamos Kite Festival the third weekend in May at the Spirio Soccer Fields in White Rock. The festival has grown over the years and now includes several pre-festival kite-building workshops for kids at local schools and culminates in a three-day-long, activity-packed, festival weekend. The kite-festival weekend kicks off Friday night with the start of Gordon’s Summer Concert Series and a night kite-flight demonstration. The main festival is held  Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and includes music, food, kite-building workshops, and lots of kite flying. Kite enthusiasts from all over the southwest fly their large, intricately shaped kites and hand-made flying works of art, demonstrate stunt-kite flying, and grace the fields with incredibly colorful banners.  Free kite-building workshops for kids are held on Saturday and Sunday afternoon where children build and decorate simple kites with assistance from volunteers. Kids use both their craft and artistic skills to put literally hundreds of these kites up in the sky. For the six-and-under crowd, prebuilt kites are available for decorating. A kite hospital is staffed with kite medics to mend the inevitable broken and injured kites using sticks, duct tape, and ingenuity. For those who do not wish to build their own, a kite vendor is at the festival with a selection of ready-to-fly kites to purchase.  Everyone young at heart is invited. Bring a kite, build a kite, fly a kite, or just take in the artful scene.

Just back from Edgewood - Pitty about the strong winds - a few people braved it and flew various kites - great friendly group and fun was had by all.

We saw people fly at Balloon Fiesta. Waiting for things to happen on the field.
Also when nothing is on at Balloon field I hear you can fly there - need to find out more though.

We've seen people fly at Johnson Field, UNM. We take our family to the Netherwoods park when it's windy.

Hi my name is Nanci. I am interested in getting back into kite flying. I have not flown in about 11 years. I have 3 stunt kites that I need to dust off and get into the air. Does this group meet on a regular basis. Are there any kite events comming up?

In general, where is a good place in Albuquerque to fly a kite? I live not far from Bullhead, but there always seems to be something going on there on the weekends. (Which is great!) But I don't want to trip over anyone, hit a power line or interfere with a soccer/softball game. Thanks!
