I think eggs can last a long time - as long as you havent washed them and they have no cracks..I wouldnt worry too much about it! I dont put our eggs in the fridge - they sit out on my counter in a basket, and I have never had a problem.
Apparently washing them removes some protecting barrier that keeps them from rotting, so its better to just scrape anything that might be on there off, or just crack the egg from the other side.
If they've been in your yard for five years you must be doing something right!

Greetings! We saw the article in the Sunday paper and just had to join. Sorry we missed the Coop Tour. We have been looking for help for a few years but could not find any locally, until now. We live in the South Valley and about 5 yrs ago two hens took up residence in our yard. We have no coop for them so they sleep in our trees. They are named "Mazey" and "Chicken LIttle" and just seem happy to be here. They scratch around the property and keep down the snail and other critter populations. We feed them cracked corn and suet treats. They also eat birdseed that falls to the ground from our feeders. It took us awhile to figure out they were laying hens because they are very sneaky about where they make their nests. We finally got wise to them and try to locate them each year to collect the eggs while they are still good to use. We need to know more about what needs they have and about the whole egg collecting process. Like how long are they good for and what to wash them with, etc. We have given some to our friends and relatives but we want to be sure they are safe. We would appreciate any help this group can give us. And we have lots of stories to tell about our girls! Thanks.
