About a week ago, we had coyotes in our back yard. The killed my pet goose of 13 years and a chicken. It was at about 4am. This was not a human predator, we actually saw 2 coyotes and scared them off - a little late.
Now we are caging them every night, and still let them have full access to our yard during the day.
Welcome to the world of the urban coyote. Sorry about your loss. We are in Corrales where coyotes are brazen. I lost 13 of 15 chickens one morning. We have built the Fort Knox of chicken coops and now the girls have a little less freedom but more security. Sound familiar?
My neighbor has a 4 ft wall they jumped over. We were shocked! They've been free range for years.
I live just off a ditch in Alameda. I let mine free range in a section literally at the edge of an open ditch trail all day, but lock 'em up at night. I am more afraid of the raccoons and skunks actually. Anyway, Haven't lost a one bird to predators in 3 years... but I do also have dogs. I've heard Coyotes will stay away if you have medium or large dogs. What is other folks experience with dogs as a deterrent?
I have always had two dogs and that hasn't stopped skunks, raccoons or coyotes much. And I had a 5.5 foot fence around my coop and that isn't stopping any of the predators nowadays. On second thought, maybe I would have lost more birds if the dogs weren't there.
BTW coyotes can jump a six-foot fence. I have personally seen it done.
