Hi-

I noticed during the coop tour a lot of keepers put straw down in the pen and coop, this is for easy clean up, right? Where can small coop owners get straw or other appropriate material?
PS-our girls are laying 1-2 eggs each daily and they are yummy! We've had plenty for neighbors. ;]

I use wood chips--- the kind of bedding used for horse stalls. It come in big, cheap bales at your feed store.
Thanks Janet. How long does it last? And how do you compost?
I use hay from the feed store at Rio bravo and Isletta called Western Mercantile 111 Rio Bravo Boulevard Southeast, Albuquerque, NM 87105-5901 (505) 877-1504. Its cheap, easy to muck out and its soft for the babies. Also helps keep the ladies warm in the winter
I use the planer shavings from my shop. We also give them away (FREE) by posting them to craigslist. You can see them here: http://albuquerque.craigslist.org/zip/1933253316.html

They work great for me and my 16 girls. The shavings/sawdust are all either oak, maple or poplar.
Jim-
Thanks for the link, we're going to come by today or Thursday. I really wanted something that would compost well and I'll mix with straw. Perfect.
Duke City Radical - ISLETA SW? Thanks, because this is close to home.
My previous post may have not been clear enough. The shavings are a MIXTURE of oak, maple or poplar. Like I said though, they work great for my girls. Just make sure to bring some bags to put the shavings in ;)
