Duke City Fix

Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

We had a good time at the Fiery Foods fiesta last weekend -- even if the $15 p/p admission fee made me a little cranky -- we tasted our way up & down every aisle!

There was a lot o' stuff to love, but of my three most-favorites, two were local products: AlbuqCookies and Los Cuates salsa. I've always loved Los Cuates' salsa, but the cookies were new to me.

I posted the details and web links, along with my 3rd pick "Sauce Goddess", on my blog, here:

I did not attend my beloved Fiery Foods Show because of the raised price. It's my own little personal stand.
Are we not in a recession? The greed of the event producers is extremly frustrating and just p*sses me off!
Okay, with that rant off my chest....

My 3 favorites so far from every year past:

Smokin' Willies BBQ Sauce, Original- it is sublime!!! Truely. OMG, just thinking about it....mmmm

Bloody Mary"s, Circus of Fear Habanero/Vinegar sauce- the only hab/vin sauce with integrity, flavor, taste

Sweet Sunshine, Jamiacan Jerk- super spicy... and tangy... and sweet.... and smokey...and slightly fruity...ahhh, heaven.

I also always come home with DEFCONs' Habby Pony or Habby Horse. They are a fun booth!
All of the above are w/o corn sryup, high futose corn syrup or any other disgusting goo!

The year before last, I went. While my sissy companions went to the casino in search of 'food' I started up the aisles.
About 25 minutes later I went to the entrance to find them and was suddenly, utterly wretched! Like my guts were twisted and trying to expulse from my body! I asked for a bathroom and only made it to a large trash barrel slightly tucked in a corner! Right there in front of the firey food gods, security gaurds, and people coming and going, my just consumed samples were going quicky! The humiliation was pretty good. The humour on my companions faces when I told them was even better. They were mighty perplexed, as well. They know me to sweat, tear up, or sneeze in the face of hot food and come back asking for more. Anyway, I felt 100% immediatly...and we enjoyed the rest of the day w/o incident. Everyone pushed their boundries a bit a we had a great time that year.

If I knew the culprit or what exactly my body reacted to so violently I would share, but alas, it is a mystery.

Meanwhile, my favorite locals are;
any of the 505 sauces/salsas
Jillipepper Chipolte Mix is just too good!

And I totally agree with Los Cuates salsa-yum! I made it once by accident (well, it tasted very close) and did not write it down while I was doing it! But I'm happy to support them. What's a Albucookie?
I'll have to check out your blog, Maggiebelize to find out....

Does anyone else have some favorite local salsa/sauces?

Well, how amazing is this: I just got an email from the AlbuqCookies guys, and I won the monthly drawing for a free bag of cookies! I really never win anything. Woohoo!

Didn't say which flavor they're sending ... And they said my winning had nothing to do with my blog post (grin).

They also told me that Triangle Groceries out here in Cedar Crest is going to start carrying them, yea!

And I really like the Smokin' Willies BBQ Sauce too. Good pick.

I somehow missed the Sweet Sunshine Jamaican Jerk, I'll have to look next year. I really like Jamaican jerk chicken, but I usually make my own marinade/baste from scratch. Years ago I started with the recipe from the old Sugar Reef Caribbean cookbook and went from there.

I meant to say that the monthly drawing for AlbuqCookies is ongoing ... you can win some, too!
