Yes, castrated males.  I have no specific questions... yet.  I just wanted to know if anyone has tips, advice, or anything to offer that we may not know about since we're completely new to this.  They are so friggin cute!  We love them and our toddlers do too.

That's great Kelli. What specific questions do you have? Are these castrated males?

Zuni1970 have you considered some of the mini breeds?  That's where folks take a standard goat(Nubian, Alpine, La Mancha, Oberhasli etc.) and breed to a Nigerian buck  to get a Mini.  They usually milk more like their full sized dams but are closer in size to and  eat more like their Nigerian side!   I personally don't breed them but have had several folks who have standard does use my Nigie buck to make mini's so I could point you in the right direction depending on which breed you want (I know 2 mini Nubian breeders, 2 Mini LaMancha, 1 Mini Ob here and one in Aztec)I do breed (and know about 4 other folks) Nigerians which are under about 2 ft tall for Milking stock.  I have milk records on some of my girls, their dams etc. and know several other folks who do also.

Yes, I think it's legal as long as you have 4000 square feel of open roaming space (fenced of course).  We are at the bottom of a cul-de-sac so we have an unusually large backyard (it even has a 2 car garage in the middle of it) so we *think* it's legal for us to have 2 small goats.
We are going to have to fence off our gardens though.... LOL!

Kellie, is that legal in the city?

we just had our first babies of the year and have two adorable boys who will be for sale as wethers. They are brothers and are 1/2 bottle raised and 1/2 dam raised.  They are about 1 1/2 weeks old and we are looking for a good pet home for them. One is light chocolate with blue eyes and the other one is dark chocolate with brown eyes.  Both are curious, friendly, playful boys.  Asking $100 for the pair.  They will be ready to go in about 6 weeks unless you want to bottle feed them!!!!  IF you know of anyone looking for pet wethers they are welcome to email me at NMgoatgal@gmail.com

We just got 2 male baby pigmy/Nigerian mini-goats this past weekend from a place in Edgewood.  They are roaming in our backyard near Wyoming & I-40 as we speak.  If anyone has any tips or advice for us please let us know (we're pretty much CLUELESS about everything).  We'd also like to get chickens too.  Can they co-mingle?

My name is Michael and I'm the Youth urban farming Cooridinator for a program called Cycles of Life. I'm looking for some one in need of help in the ABQ area. Very very interested in learning about goats and helping any goat keepers. If you feel that you are someone that is in need of help, feel free to contact me. Thanks

I have read the city zoning laws.  In the city limits you have to have 4,000 square feet of land for each goat (or sheep).  It seems to be more about having the required space.  You can go on line and read the zoning requirements.  I can look through my papers and cite the place where the requirements are located.  To answer a question of how many goats--I would say that usually it is best to have two (or more.) I have goat who was bottle raised because her mother rejected her. I took her to the Grower's Market when she was young. Her name is Lilly.   When she was young she related to our dogs most closely. Actually she related to people most closely and then dogs.  She has had difficulty relating to goats.  But now has as adult goat I have to watch her and train so that she doesn't butt the dogs like she does the other goats.  So I am back to the its better to have two so that they have company and speak the same language.  It would not be good to have a lonely goat bleating in a city neighborhood.  Proabably not a good thing anywhere.  I just did a little research about goats and their sizes.  Nigerians at full growth weigh around 75 pounds.  The largest breeds of goats weigh from 125 to 170.  I think you could argue that you could keep two Nigerians if you have the 4,000 square feet of yard.  It also helps if you have your neighbors on board.  Goats are wonderful engaging animals.  My hand raised goat did lead on a leash better than most dogs.  I have not been working with her and her skills are not so smooth right nowl.  But if you had a couple of goats in a neighborhood with lots of training and attention, I think neighbors could have fun, too.

I have a buck for sale with an outstanding pedigree.  I bought him 2 years ago as a baby buck.  he has one of the best milking pedigrees in the Southwest.  I paid $400 for him when he was a baby and am asking that price for him now.  I have had 2 sets of babies by him and have several does bred to him for this coming year.  He comes form a CAE, CL, and Johnnes negative herd.  He inherited his milking stars in BOTH registries.  the Two daughters I own of his will be on Milk test in 2011 and he probably will eventually earn his + designation in the next two years.  His dame is almost a finished champion in both registeries and she has been on the Top 10 list for milkers in the Nation in both registries.  She also was among the first group of Nigerians to earn the Superior Genetics Designation through ADGA (Top 15% of the breed in the nation for  production/performance) > In the meantime he is standing at Stud at my farm for $75/doe (must be CAE/CL negative - be prepared to show the test results) along with my other buck who is a finished Champion in AGS and needs one more win in ADGA.
