Today's Albuquerque Journal "Road Warrior" column has a nice profile of the new bike/recreation trail on the west side:  Paseo de la Mesa Trail.  4.2 miles of great scenery, E end starts at Unser.  Check it out at:  http://www.cabq.gov/openspace/PaseodelaMesa.html

We at Immanuel Presbyterian Church invite you to take advantage of our valet bicycle parking during the Summer Fest in Nob Hill on July 23 from 2 pm to 10 pm.  Immanuel is at the corner of Silver and Carlisle, SW but we'll be parking bicycles in our secure fenced lot on Hermosa St. just SW of Central.  An attendant will be on site at all times and it's free.  Bicycles must be picked up no later than 10 pm.

Sun Ray you have identified what many of us already realize about that area: it is dangerous for cyclists! As a cyclist, I am annoyed by the UNM student population that rides unsafely in that area. No helmets, dark colored clothing, running stop signs, jumping in front of cars, I have seen it all.  Sadly I am not surprised that some would even disobey a school bus' stop arms and red lights.  Thank you for your patience, because we just can't get everyone to ride with it.

To all riders on Silver near the University.  I am a School Bus driver.  I drive bus 131 and I have noticed that people think the bus stop is optional.  Please stop when the Stop Arm, red lights are on this means children are boarding or deboarding.  Also, Silver is NOT for cyclist to do whatever they want.  You are a vehicle and are just as dangerous as any other vehicles out there.  Stops are not optional. I almost hit one of you at the intersection of Girard and Silver, because you blasted out from the sidewalk past the stop sign right in front of my bus.  I love cycling but we need to observe the rules.

ya know what sucks? Riding your bike home saturday night in a group, with helmets and lights and getting pulled over by the cops. No kidding, after merging in the left lane to make the turn in on coming traffic and almost getting hit by a pick up truck who's not wanting to stay behind cyclists and cutting in front of us to make the turn, the county cop (sitting at the intersection) pulls us over and rages in my face. We were ordered to "get off the road", "go home" and accused of having "small lights" and "reckless riding". We had cherry bombs on the back and white lights on the front! You can help, urge Manuel Gonzales the Sheriff up for re-election educate his deputies on bike safety and road rules.

The Rio Bravo Bridge.....Bike lanes always full of garbage that falls off of trucks!
Seems it needs to be swept every monday...eh?

Lots of riders commute to KAFB every day from all over the city - I am one of them. We in ABQ are really fortunate for the flexible routes in to the base. Generally, I would recommend that you plan your route according to the gate closest to your building. But from the NE, the Eubank gate is preferable over the Wyoming gate. Not sure which org you are going to work for, but one or more may have a "commuters group" online community. In the mean time, check out http://www.cabq.gov/transit/getting-around/bicycling

There are loads of Bike Paths (dedicated), Bike lanes (an actual stripeon the road dividing the bike lane from the auto lane) and bike routes (residential streets marked for bikes) throughtout the NE area. the base is in the SE area, but you ought to be ableto finde a nice route. As one member pointed out a new google mapsw feature is bike routes so you could give it a try from where you are...

Hi,
I am moving to ABQ in early-April to work on the base. My questions are is it safe to bike commute to the base? How easy it to access trails from your house if you live in the NE area? If I have to load my bike and drive to the trails I hardly ever ride.

There will be a new (third) Ghost Bike going up for Roy Sekreta soon. Watch for others as well. Help me keep track of the ghost bikes. Post reports here or become a member of the Albuquerquean's for Ghost Bikes group here on Duke City Fix, and post there.
