While huge numbers of Pit Bulls in this country are cherished family pets, many not so fortunate suffer the consequences of neglect, fighting rings, and a never ending bad rap. The ladies of The Babes and Bullies are standing up for the pit bull’s by shining a new light on the loving and loyal breed. We are doing so by creating a calendar (to be released in November 2008), volunteering at Albuquerque’s Animal Care Centers, and raising money at local events put on by B.B.B. All proceeds will be donated to Albuquerque’s only pit bull program RAAP– Responsibly Adopting Albuquerque’s Pit Bulls – a non-profit animal welfare organization.

In 2006, RAAP was formed, specifically to educate the public about this magnificent but much-maligned breed and to place as many of them as possible into loving, responsible homes. As you may not know, Albuquerque’s Animal Care Centers take in more pit bulls than any other type of dog. Nearly 25% of all the dogs impounded at both our city shelters are pit bulls and pit mixes. The vast majority of these are euthanized.

It is the mission of The Babes and Bullies and RAAP to dispel the hysteria and correct the misconceptions about bull breeds via outreach and information, community events, and training( puppy and adult socialization classes). Any, and all contributions for the upcoming calendar can help us achieve this goal, and not only give the adoptable pit bulls a new lease on life, but prevent them from terrible situations in the first place.

Comment by Rachel on December 23, 2008 at 1:35pm: Here's my Naomi. When I was looking to adopt my second dog I decided I was going to adopt a pit bull since they are the least likely to find homes. My family gasped at my decision and I must admit I was somewhat concerned myself, but now I know that I couldn't have made a better choice. She is the sweetest, most affectionate dog I have ever known. She loves nothing more than to curl up next to me and rest her head on my lap as I lay on the couch to read. I will continue to adopt pit bulls throughout the rest of my life.

It gave me lots of insight into the breeds and also some tips on keeping her calm and keeping other people from being nervous. Like, that a bully might not start a fight, but they'll always finish it and they'll always get blamed for whatever happens.

Also, I urge everyone to pick up a copy of " Training Secrets for Bully Breeds" from the Popular Dog Series, volume 9.. It is amazing!! I got mine from PetsMart.
