I've got a teeny tiny 600 square foot apartment in DC that will have 9 people staying in it on Inauguration weekend - 5 from Albuquerque. I know at least a dozen others from the Duke City who are planning to attend, and maybe 10 or so people who have talked about it.
Wow! Tickets are super difficult to get this year, so your son really lucked out!
I think People to People have sometimes used the dormitories at my university for their summer programs...what a great experience for your daughter as well!
Born / raised in Maryland. Moved to Albuquerque little over 2.5 years ago. Boyfriend and I are crashing in Adams Morgan (DC neighborhood) with my college roommate and going to watch the inauguration the next day. Just heard a report that if you're planning on driving into DC, all major bridges will be closed on the day of due to security concerns! YIKES! Also there is a commemorative subway (metro) card w/ Obama's face on it for historical groupies. Can't wait!!!
I've also heard that if you are less than 2 miles from the inauguration festivities, you should consider walking instead of taking Metro. So we are all packing good walking shoes along with our formal wear. :)
