Checking in on some of our downtown and nob hill newbies - has anyone been at all or recently and have on the ground reports?

I just saw the shimmering OPEN sign at the Cube minutes ago, and have been to Cosmos once with a return trip ASAP. Food was very promising the first time, if pricey. Kind of like Graze but maybe not *as* good? I know that's a pretty damning thing to say, since Graze couldn't make money.

Any other new places ya'll have found? I feel like my target list is short lately.

Hey Andrea,

I'm curious too. I don't have firsthand info, but heard mixed reviews on Cosmos. Heard the food is good from one person and mediocre from another (though the second just ate some free noshes at an opening party). My parents were eager to try it but ended up walking out after waiting a ridiculously long time for service/order taking (note: my Dad has the patience of Job and the place had more staff than customers at the time). Cube has some cheap PBR+hot dog special going on but I haven't heard any first time reports.
UPDATE: My parents went back to Cosmo and had a lovely time. Service was very attentive this time around. They had a number of tapas and were pleased overall and said each one ranged from good to really good.
I'm not into tapas, but I'd go to Cosmo (Cosmos? Cosmo's?) again for drinks.
Cosmos is very, very tasty in my experience...it is a little pricey, but worth a splurge. The drinks are tasty, too, and the servers were attentive the two times I've been there.

I have yet to check out the Cube, but Memphis BBQ + hot dogs is a unique combination for a restaurant, to say the least. Seems like maybe they're aiming squarely at the college crowd?

What is Dawn Sanchez Creations?
Though it seems they do have take-out food, so sort of a restaurant. :)
We just had lunch at the Cube. Brisket sandwich with slaw, mac and cheese on the side, homemade lemonade (tart and delicious). The brisket was quite good. Very tender, not too much smoke, and the sauce on the side was tangy and in small amounts complemented the barbecue nicely. They've got lots of interesting stuff on the menu. I can't wait to go back and try one of their 'dogs and a beer.

Andrea and everyone here: it is COSMO. No s at the end. It is not Kramer's (from Seinfeld) restaurant, hence, it is not Cosmo's either. Just like Scalo is Scalo, not Scalo's.

Gah.
I apologize. It drives me crazy when people say or write "Scalo's".

Cosmo!
Tried The Cube twice so far. Their burgers (ground sirloin) are awesome. I went on lunch Wednesday and had a burger with muenster and mushrooms. It came with fries (seasoned with coarse salt and fresh ground pepper) and a drink. The burger was extremely flavorful, with lettuce, onion, & tomato. We asked for mayo, because that's the kind of persons my lunch companion and I are, and...well, yummo.

Tonight I had a chili cheese dog. On the menu board, the Cube announces that hot dogs are their specialty, and I can see why. The all-beef frank I had was topped with a delicous texas-style chili and melted cheese. The dog still had snap, and the chili tasted of more than fat & salt, which tendency can be, in my opinion, the danger of meat chili.

My dining companion had the pulled pork sandwich, which was the exact correct proportion of smoky meat and sweet tangy sauce on s delicious kaiser roll, with what he said was an awesome cole slaw.

And I had chocolate mousse for dessert that was by turns intensely chocolatey and smooth and lightly creamy...

Give this place try. Forgive any birthing pangs and actually taste stuff.
I could never figure out why Graze couldn't make money, because it was amazing. The food at Cosmo is pretty good, but not close to the quality of Graze by a long shot. (Can you tell I still miss the place?)

Cosmo is a little pricey for the hit-and-miss of its menu, but I will go back. It would be perfect for a drink and nibble in the evening. Try the stuffed dates, they're to die for!

I've been curious about The Cube, and after the reviews here I think I better try it ASAP!

I just returned from a delicious lunch at The Cube earlier this afternoon. The building is very spacious and there was ample parking (yay)! I had the brisket sandwhich, which was previously pictured above, and it was fantastic! The meat was tender, yet lean. The BBQ sauce which is served on the side had good flavor. My boyfriend ordered a burger with munster cheese and bacon. It was a large burger that tasted good, but it didn't seem to be all that special -- the BBQ meats looked to be the clear winners to me.

We also ordered a side of the pasta salad, which comes with tomatoes and mozarella cheese. The sides there are basically like small entrees in themsevles, served on huge plates that contain more than enough food to share among several people!

It ended up taking a while for us to get our food at lunch today, and we were suprised when the woman who works at the counter brought us out complimentary sodas and a plate of ribs with her apologies for the long wait. We found this to be a very friendly and personalized gesture and we enjoyed the ribs greatly! They had a dry-rub seasoning that had hints of citrus (thyme or corriander, perhaps?) and had a very bright flavor! Overall we enjoyed our lunch at The Cube greatly and will be going back again to try the rest of their menu!
We had a delightful meal at Cosmo on Tuesday. Very attentive staff/service. The 7 tapas we had were all very good and we'd get each of them again. The prices were no more or less reasonable than in other tapas restaurants we've experienced, and were easily 30% less than El Farol in Santa Fe. We'll be going back for sure, esp for the huge glass of $6 sangria. The interior is open and friendly, too. Loved the panels hanging from the ceiling in the big room.
