I have been dying for Ethiopian food in Albuquerque. I just heard yesterday about Damara Ethiopian which serves once a week out of Winning coffee. Rumor has it that if there's enough interest they may either expand or open their own restaurant. Has anyone checked them out?

I haven't been myself but I've heard it's doing great. The word is that you need to get there early or they run out of food.
We went a couple of months ago. We arrived about 7:15 and they were already out of food. It looked good, smelled good, and everyone seated seemed to be enjoying themselves. I'm not sure if they're as packed now but you may want to go on the early side of their service.
Our experience was similar. i had tried to e'-mail the guy and I left a message on facebook asking about reservations and heard nothing we got there at 6:45'- no seating, no one greeting people and letting them know what was going on and many hippies eating '- not what I was hoping for.
Luckily we were in Milwaukee in July and got wonderful Ethiopian food.
Oh my freaking gosh. For the past 9 years, I have been DYING for Ethiopian, and can't shut up about how there is no Ethipoian in Albuquerque... I'm from Seattle and grew up eating Ethiopian, and miss it dearly. I was in Denver last month visiting family, and all I wanted was to have it. On our way out we planned to stop at somewhere for lunch, but got notice from my bank that we had spent too much on our vacation and were broke... so no Ethiopian... God damn!!! Ethiopian in Albuquerque?! My mouth has been waiting for this for almost a decade... :-P
Yum! What day/time do they usually serve it up at Winnings?
Open Saturdays from 6:30 - 9:00 pm.

Here's the website: http://www.freshethiopian.com/
Thanks! And as luck would have it.... ;]
It's not quite as straightforward as the website makes it sound, unfortunately, as my sister, her BF and I discovered to our dismay on July 24th. I tracked it down on Facebook after (not that difficult, the owner announces sometimes on the We Want an Ethiopian Restaurant in New Mexico group)

The last update suggests it may be back soon, but no confirmed date yet: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#!/profile.php?id=738823112&v=wall
I'm lucky enough to get my Ethiopian food fix when I'm at work out of state, so I haven't paid much attention to this here. For some reason I have a (false???) memory of eating at an Ethiopian restaurant in SF about 10 years ago. Was I imagining this? Do we really have NO Ethiopian restaurants in NM? *gulp*
No Ethiopian that I know of in the 14 years I've lived here. We went to DC several years ago & ate at 3 different Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurants, both to taste the variety and also to get our fix,
The Damara folks are back...and served at Winnings again tonight. Delicious as always.
I went to the kick-off night at Winnings and it was packed and delicious, but I hadn't heard of a repeat. It certainly seems like there is the interest to support an Ethiopian restaurant here!

In the meantime, put Sept 24 & 25 on your calendars, as we will have Ethiopian food at ¡Globalquerque! again this year. The food is available during the ticketed concerts, but also during the free day programming on Sept 25.
