I didn’t really know it at the time, but I did my first “staging” when I was only 16. I was working for a local retailer whose store window displays were sorely in need of pizzazz! I wasn’t much of a sales person, so I volunteered to dress the windows. I’ve loved arranging spaces using color, art, light and furniture ever since. My background is in the liberal arts. I have a degree in journalism and I worked as a reporter for several years. I later ended up in public relations. I’ve been an art gallery owner since 1995, which also helps to fuel creativity for staging. I figured I could have some fun in yet another arena, so I got my real estate license in 2001 because I was drawn to the idea of buying properties, repairing them and staging them for sale or for vacation rental. I’ve repaired stucco, replaced outlets, hung new lighting, painted, painted again and painted some more! Staging isn’t a job to me….it’s playing…it’s fun!

The following is a conversation I had by email with one of the members of Home Staging Hints:

Hey Jana, you've painted furniture in the past, right? what kind of paint do you use?

Well, interestingly I’ve used a lot of different things. The key is to use primer before you put any paint down, especially if your surface already has a finish. So, some sanding, some primer (you can use a spray primer or just household paint primer). I’ve used house paint and I’ve used spray paint. Of course, if you use spray paint you want to do it outside or in a well-ventilated place.

Found a great place, somewhat like Duke City Fix, to see what's going on in and around ABQ. Check it out!

Make sure your "destination" walls really pop! These are the walls where your eyes go when you walk into a room.
