Raccoons are voracious omnivores. While they do eat birds, I think they are particularly fond of eggs, both avian and reptilian.

Factors that have made our decades-long Roadrunner residents leave our vicinity:
- our neighbors cutting down trees and bushes and making their yard overly tidy;
- our dog who chases them (she chases the Curved Bill Thrasher, too.)

I'm worried about the roadrunner population in my area. The quail and pheasants left before I arrived here in 1999. I attributed that to urbanization. But the roadrunners flourished, then disappeared. I haven't seen one for a year now, when formerly I saw them daily in my yard and widely over two or more square miles. But raccoons have arrived in big numbers, living in the huge cottonwoods on public lands along acequias and drainage ditches. Is there a connection between roadrunner loss and raccoon gains? I know coons are out at night, but might they be munching on roadrunners on the roost or, in season, or on the nest. Ideas?
