I'm hoping that by now you know that there are two bills in the Roundhouse this session.
One
PROPOSING AN AMENDMENT TO ARTICLE 20 OF THE CONSTITUTION OF NEW
MEXICO TO DEFINE MARRIAGE AS THE UNION OF ONE MAN AND ONE
WOMAN. (House Joint Resolution 4)
and one
PROPOSING AN AMENDMENT TO ARTICLE 20 OF THE CONSTITUTION OF NEW
MEXICO TO PROVIDE THAT THE ISSUANCE OF A MARRIAGE LICENSE SHALL
NOT BE DENIED ON THE BASIS THAT THE SEX OF BOTH APPLICANTS IS
THE SAME AND THAT NO CHURCH OR RELIGIOUS INSTITUTION SHALL BE
REQUIRED TO PERFORM A MARRIAGE CEREMONY OR RECOGNIZE A MARRIAGE
FOR RELIGIOUS PURPOSES THAT CONFLICTS WITH THE CHURCH'S OR
RELIGIOUS INSTITUTION'S BELIEFS. (House Joint Resolution 3)
If you haven't done so now is a really good time to be a bit of an activist in our State. Please contact your State Representative and encourage them to support JR 3 and to table JR 4. As States across the country, DC, and our military show - no harm comes to anyone by accepting the LBGTQ community. And New Mexico ought to carry the message of acceptance and non-discrimination forward. So if you are gay, call and speak up for yourself. If you are gay-friendly, I ask you to add your voice to the call for equality.
Let's pick up President Obama's words and make them true in New Mexico:
"We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths - that all of us are created equal - is the star that guides us still; just as it guided our forebearers through Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall; just as it guided all those men and women, sung and unsung, who left footprints along this great Mall, to hear a preacher say that we cannot walk alone; to hear a King proclaim that our individual freedom is inextricably bound to the freedom of every soul on Earth."

Permalink Reply by David Cameron on February 7, 2013 at 6:21am The Consumer and Public Affairs committee voted 3 to 2 (along party lines) to table HJR4, thus effectively killing it. They voted the same way to pass HJR3 on to the full body for debate. So, the task now is to contact our representatives and encourage them to support HJR3. Baby steps.
