Duke City Fix

Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

So, we have explored a lot of the day trips to the North and East, but I need some suggestions on where to go south of ABQ. We like places that remind us why we moved to NM - unique geography and culture, long history, and, well, the weirdness factor.

By day trip, I mean no more than about 2 hours one way (hopefully with stops in between), and no need to get up before about 8am.

We've already been to: Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Bandelier, Jemez Springs and Pueblo, Acoma, Turquoise Trail, Tent Rocks, and probably some I am forgetting.

Straight down I-25 you have Bosque Del Apache for bird watching (~90 minutes one way) and 2 hours south is Truth or Consequences (Formerly Hot Springs, NM). There's a few ghost towns in the vicinity, too.

I second Truth or Consequences. It is a funny little town and great if you're up for hitting the hot springs. The Sierra Grande Lodge is a splurge but I think it was really worth it, if you have time to stay the night. They do great massages and have hot springs in the room. Even if you're there just for the day, it would be worth checking it out. Cafe Bella Luca was really nice for dinner.
