The Guerrilla Girls are legendary, feminist, masked avengers in the tradition of anonymous do-gooders like Robin Hood, Wonder Woman and Batman. They use facts, humor and outrageous visuals to expose sexism, racism and corruption in politics, art, film and pop culture. Their work has been passed around the world by their tireless supporters. They have appeared at over 90 universities and museums in recent years, as well as in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Bitch, Mother Jones and Artforum; on NPR, the BBC and CBC; and in many art and feminist texts. They are authors of stickers, billboards, many posters and other projects (including a large-scale installation for the 2005 Venice Biennale) and several books including The Guerrilla Girls’ Bedside Companion to the History of Western Art; Bitches, Bimbos and Ballbreakers: The Guerrilla Girls’ Illustrated Guide to Female Stereotypes; and The Guerrilla Girls’ Art Museum Activity Book. They will talk about their work, their philosophy of activism and their campaign against the lack of ethics in the art world.
Making Monkey Business: Workshop with the Guerrilla Girls
Politics got you down? The art world sucks? Bring your issues to a workshop with Kathe Kollwitz and Frida Kahlo, founding members of the Guerrilla Girls. In two and a half hours, the Guerrilla Girls will take you through the chaotic process of brainstorming, collective give-and-take and larger group input that has helped them perfect their own brand of in-your-face activist work for the last 20 years. And get some career advice about ethics and the art world along the way. Aestheticize your anger!
The Guerrilla Girls in Albuquerque is made possible by 516 ARTS, AMP Concerts, the City of Albuquerque’s KiMo
Theatre, the New Mexico Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Through the Flower, UNM ARTS
Lab, UNM Feminist Research Institute, UNM Women’s Studies program, albuquerqueARTS and Frieda Arth
